When I first came to the US, I was very confused when I went to buy yam at the grocery store. It turned out that what I called yam in Southeast Asia is actually called taro here and yam is actually sweet potato. Totally confused? Yeah, me too! Even after so many years, I am still confused.
Anyway, the taro (or yam in the US) is first shredded and then rice flour is added to it before steaming. After steaming, it is topped with various toppings like fried onion, dried shrimp, spring onion, red chili, and chinese sausage.
A slice of yam kueh that is drizzled with hoisin sauce and spicy chili sauce before serving.
