How to make an octodog

October 5, 2009

As promised, here’s another tutorial. This time, it’s the simple yet well-loved octodog!!

First, cut the hot dog into half. You can actually use the entire hot dog if you want really long tentacles. I’ve even done a 3/4 and 1/4 size for a mommy and baby octodog. But I find that this particular size fits well in my bento boxes.

Using a knife, make a slit in the middle and down till almost 3/4 way down.

Then make a few more additional slits till you get 8 legs. Sometimes I use a scissors to make those slits especially when I am making a baby octodog. The knife can get a little slippery, so I find it easier just to snip with a scissors.

Dump the hotdog into a pot of boiling water. As it sits in the boiling water, the tentacles will start curling up.

Octodog 4

Remove from heat after a few minutes.

For the eyes & mouth, I use chocolate rice sprinkles. Just poke 3 little holes with the tip of a chopstick and stuff 3 chocolate sprinkles in them. If you don’t like sprinkles, you can also use these Food Writer Edible Markers or anything else you fancy.

And you’ll have the Octodog!!! :P   Have fun making these!!
