Growing up in Malaysia, I ate a lot of Hainanese Chicken Rice. I remember the last couple years of my elementary school when I had a lot of school and extra curricular activities, I would always go to a Chicken Rice shop near my school and have my lunch. Nowadays if I want to eat Chicken Rice, I will have to make it myself. I don’t have the convenience of running to the nearest Chicken Rice shop and buying it. So when we were in Portland, guess what we found – a Chicken Rice stall in the form of Nong’s Khoa Man Gai. This food truck sells the Thai version of chicken rice which is very similar to the Malaysian version except for the sauce.
I read on several reviews that this food truck is a popular one. They open at 10 am and usually they are sold out by 1:30 or 2pm. Luckily we were staying at a hotel a couple of blocks away. So we made sure that we were there bright and early and got this yummy chicken rice.
The garlic/ginger flavored rice topped with steamed chicken, cucumber and cilantro is accompied by sauce and soup. It is no fancy food. In fact it is a really simple food but for me, it is comfort food all the way from my childhood.
