Alaskan King Crab

No cooking or recipes in this post but I just had to post a couple of photos that I took at a restaurant in Vancouver last week. Have you ever watch the show “Deadliest Catch” on the Discovery channel? For those that don’t watch this show, it basically follow the crews on the fishing boat as they catch the Alaskan King Crab during season. This job carries a very high risk of death & injury, thus the name Deadliest Catch.

Anyway, meet these pretty babies that the fishermen risk their life for! Don’t they look cool? No matter how many times I see them, I always think that they are the most interesting crab ever. They look so alien-like, don’t you think?

They are also very huge. I didn’t realize till I was looking through my photos that the Alaskan King Crab was squashing the Dungeness Crabs! Check out the size difference!

Each of these King Crab averages about 10 – 15 pounds. Right now, there’s a major promotion going on around the Vancouver restaurants for about $14 per pound. Even so, it will cost around $150-$200 for each King Crab. Yikes! Wonder how much it costs if there’s no promotion!!
