As usual, I am behind on my bento posting, so I am sneaking in one here in between the Chinese New Year snacks.

This was a very simple bento consisting of french toast squares with a little raspberry jam/jelly for dipping, whole-wheat chicken nuggets & applesauce with sprinkles.

For Chinese New Year this year, I only baked a few very simple goodies. Originally I wanted to make pineapple tart, unfortunately the poor pineapple ended up in the tummy of the spouse & kid before I could get to it! : ) I guess no pineapple tart this year.
Anyway, here’s one of goodies that I made this year for Chinese New Year - the Honey Cornflakes Cup. This is a pretty common Chinese New Year snack but I added a little twist to it by adding almond and dried cranberries to it, and finally decorating it with a little sprinkles.

Honey Cornflakes Cup
40gm butter
2 tbsp honey
1 tbsp sugar
2 cups cornflakes
1/2 cup almond flakes
1/2 cup dried cranberries
Method:
- Melt butter, sugar & honey in a pot over low hear till it’s all melted and the sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat.
- Add in cornflakes, almond & cranberries and mix till well-coated.
- Scoop mixture into mini baking cups.
- Bake at 350 for approximately 5 - 7 minutes. Remove & cool.

The little one never gets tired of the good old macaroni & cheese. That’s why you’ll see it very often in her bento. I love to make it for her too because it is so convenient. I try to get different shapes of macaroni just for fun. Together with macaroni and cheese, I added a hot dog flower and asparagus.
On the left tier, there’s mandarin orange topped with a tiny blueberry, pretzels and Nestle Crunch. All these are packed into the new lunchbox that I just got from Daiso, Richmond BC. Isn’t it cute? I really love it. : ) I really really need to stay away from Daiso this year!!! I’ve got more bento supplies than I need!

I am not a big football fan but B is. I know that he will be glued to the chair watching TV that day. Since we are going to be stuck at home anyway, I think it’s a good time for a party! Some friends for me to chit-chat, some friends for B to watch the game together and some friends for Lil’ C to play with. Can’t beat that, right?
The most important thing in a party is definitely food, right? I found some great deals at Artiko that sounds really good.

The last time I packed fried rice, Lil’ C didn’t like it. Last week I decided to try again. This time I added a couple of happy bunnies on top of the fried rice. The eyes & mouth of the bunnies were drawn with an edible marker pen
. Please excuse one of the bunny which has panda eyes just like mommy who has been staying up too late watching Korean series!! Hehe… I also added a ring of edamame around the fried rice. This time she ate it all!! Yay!
Other contents include the ever-present blueberries, more fried eggs and Nestle Crunch for treat. Yes, those are Christmas Nestle Crunch that I bought at 75% off after Christmas. Could not resist those sales!!! : P

It is always hard to decide on which restaurant to go to when we are in Richmond BC. There are just too many choices. That day we decided to try Shiang Garden on No. 3 Road. The restaurant looked really fancy with all their fancy elaborate decos.
According to the notice on the door, Shiang Garden opens for dinner at 5 pm. So that day we decided to have an early dinner because Lil’ C was really tired. We walked in at 5:30 pm to an empty restaurant which was a little wierd. We had the entire restaurant to ourselves for almost an hour! People did start trickling in after 6:30pm. I guess it’s either the Richmond people have late dinner or business is not that good. But it was starting to fill up by the time we left.
Anyway, back to the food. The first dish we ordered was the crab with salted egg yolk. Yummy!! Love this dish.

We ordered the pork in honey garlic sauce for Lil’ C. It tasted good but was a little too sticky for my liking. Too much honey, I guess.

I can’t remember the name of this dish but it was a house specialty. It was like braised beef. Pretty good.

If you have Keebler or Austin brand peanut butter sandwich crackers at home, you need to take note. Apparently Kellogg has pulled these crackers from store shelves because of possible contamination from the salmonella bacteria. Even though Kellogg has not issued any recall yet, they are advising consumers not to eat those products pending further investigation. Aargh!! I happen to have a box in my pantry. I bought it for Lil’ C’s snack. I think i am just going to throw it away. Better safe than sorry!

I am so behind on my bento posting! Anyway, this was last week’s bento that I made for C for her first day of school.

What better to start of the school season with some alphabets and numbers, right? Those alphabets and numbers are fruit leather. Under them are cheese sandwiches made with rainbow-colored bread. Other contents of this bento includes cheese stick flowers with cranberry center, blueberries, turkey rolls on picks and candy corn.
A little more about the bread - I bought this bread from a bakery in Richmond, BC. The first thing that attracted me to this bread was this label on the package.

I have been very curious about bread made using this “Tangzhong” method. The bread made using this method are suppose to be really soft and true enough, they were really super soft. This is definitely going on the top of my to-bake list.

During the holidays, we decided that we need a fix of authentic Chinese food. So we headed across the border to Richmond, BC. Richmond is actually part of metro Vancouver, just a little south of downtown Vancouver. It has the best and most authentic Chinese food in north America.
On our last trip, we went to Sun Sui Wah for dim-sum. This time around, we decided to go for dinner there. We have heard a lot of great things about their Alaskan King Crab and Roasted Squab. Unfortunately it was not Alaskan King Crab season, so we opted for Lobster instead.
Lobster with House Special Garlic Sauce

It was really good and fresh. Having grown up by the sea, I am very sensitive to the freshness of seafood. This definitely pass the test. I think it’s because their seafood turnover is high enough that the seafood do not stay in the tank for very long.
Roasted Squab - Another one of their signature dish.
Lil’ C loved this dish! All she had for dinner that night was squab This was a very popular dish. It seems like every table in the restaurant had this dish on their table. They even ran out of it towards the end of our meal.
We also ordered a stir-fry peatip. It was ok. Nothing to shout about. Overall, it was a good dinner.
